SAN ANGELES, EARTH – The Stellar Consortium Council in coming weeks is set to consider legislation that would confer spousal benefits to government employees who consider themselves married to an artificial intelligence entity. The issue came up when a clerk in the Consortium records office in San Angeles, Jefford Quillory, asked that his autonomous AI companion known as Rashida get any benefits in the event of his death to ensure that she’s properly maintained after his demise.Under current policy, AI are not qualified to receive benefits.

== Vanguard denies Centauran recruit ==

SAN ANGELES, EARTH – Recruiters at a San Angeles office of the Vanguard confirmed tonight that they had turned down the first would-be recruit from the planet Centauri.Humans made first contact with the crystalline jellyfish known as Centaurans about a century ago, soon after their home system was visited by the Fort Clatsop. The world had been decimated by Nall invaders shortly before the Earth ship’s arrival. The failed recruit, identified as Yxtltptryn, told CNB that although its species is devoted primarily to peace, it is not impossible for Centaurans to defend themselves or even under some circumstances to make war.”The Consortium has helped my people a great deal during the past century,” the alien said in a statement. “I offered my service as small compensation for that support.”Vanguard officials said pacifistic tendencies, physical fragility, and stigma against telepathic intrusions by aliens all work against the prospect of a Centauran in the Consortium’s military service.

== Freewheeling named Top Biz City of 2650 ==

FREEWHEELING, TOMIN KORA – Wealthstar, a holovid program dedicated to coverage of commerce in the Orion Arm, this year took the unprecedented step of declaring the domed city of Freewheeling on Tomin Kora as the Orion Arm’s “Top Business City.”James Harmon, editor and publisher of Wealthstar, told CNB that the program chose Freewheeling “because it’s time to recognize the fertile environment of ambition, drive, and entrepreneurship that’s fostered on a world like Tomin Kora.”In the past, cities chosen by Wealthstar for this honor have at least been eligible for enterprise grants from foreign governments. However, no legitimate government openly provides grants or loans to startups that intend to base themselves in the heart of a territory known for widespread criminal activity.

== Records suggest criminal ties to Wealthstar ==

GRAND ENAJ, SIVAD – Electronic communication transcripts acquired by the Consortium Broadcast Network indicate that Wealthstar editor and publisher James Harmon is linked to elements of Fagin’s Riches on Tomin Kora. This comes about a week after the Wealthstar business program showcased the city of Freewheeling on Tomin Kora as the top city for commerce in the Orion Arm.Such an unusual distinction for a highly unlikely recipient got CBN reporters digging for the truth. It turns out that Harmon may have owed as much as 3-million credits to mobsters affiliated with Lord Fagin the Pirate King. The Top Business City award may have been a quid pro quo for the forgiveness of his debts.Harmon has been unavailable for comment.

== Bot plans Baile visit ==

SAN ANGELES, EARTH – The Phyrrian unit known as BZ412 or “Busy” is expected to leave Sol System this week for a stop at the independent colonial world of Impiruil Baile.BZ412 has been received with curiosity and hospitality during stops on Castor, Earth, Luna, and Mars – despite an incident in the domed city of Bradbury when a colonist threw a red rock at Busy and declared him an “invasion scout.”The Phyrrian may reach Impiruil Baile as soon as this weekend.

== Harmon bows out at Wealthstar ==

GRAND ENAJ, SIVAD – James Harmon, editor and publisher of holovid program Wealthstar, has resigned those positions. The board of directors at CBN met this afternoon to consider and accept the letter of resignation submitted by Harmon. Wealthstar is a subsidiary of CBN.In his letter, Harmon admitted no wrongdoing in the scandalous decision to pick the Tomin Kora city of Freewheeling as the Orion Arm’s top business hub for 2650. Instead, he informed the board that he frequently suffers from exhaustion, misses too many of his children’s school activities, and must complete several home improvement projects.”The time has come to focus on my home life,” he wrote. “And I can’t do that while also serving as an unnecessary distraction from the good work this company does each and every day.”

== Vanguard reconsiders Centauran stance ==

SAN ANGELES, EARTH – A Centauran hoping to serve the Stellar Consortium in the Vanguard military may get that chance after all.Vanguard Gen. Charles Avocet today confirmed that the Consortium’s military arm is reviewing the decision of a San Angeles recruiting office to refuse the alien’s enlistment.”Just because something hasn’t been done before doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not worth doing,” Avocet told CBN. “It may well be that this Centauran isn’t suited for the rigors of infantry or the confines of a fighter cockpit, but what if it could serve as a bridge officer or a medic? We shouldn’t abandon opportunities disguised as challenges.”

== Council approves AI benefits ==

SAN ANGELES, EARTH – In a landmark move, the Stellar Consortium Council today officially approved the granting of spousal benefits to artificial intelligence partners of government employees. The legislation, brought about at the request of records clerk Jefford Quillory, means that upon his death, any benefits that might normally be conferred to a spouse in a more traditional union would go instead to an assigned AI.Such benefits could help pay for ongoing maintenance and support for the AI, proponents argued. The new benefits clause takes effect on Oct. 1.

== Roving bot dismembered on Earth ==

SAN ANGELES, EARTH – The roaming Phyrrian BZ412 – known to fans as “Busy” – died before it could depart San Angeles. The mechanoid was found, decapitated and with two limbs removed, in the Crawford Street Metro Station. Authorities say that holovid security footage shows three humans in hooded sweatshirts descending into the metro station with the remains of the Phyrrian, which they dumped onto the tracks.A custodial crew found Busy’s remains this morning. The head and missing limbs have yet to be found. No motive has been determined for the killing.

== Three arrested in Phyrrian murder ==

SAN ANGELES, EARTH – The San Angeles Police Department today arrested three men in connection with the death of a Phyrrian named BZ412.The humans, whose names haven’t been released yet, are all in their 20s and may be fraternity brothers from Pacific Coast University. Police Chief Raleigh DeVrees told the Consortium Broadcast Network that the killing appears to have been a pledge prank gone horribly wrong. The men are being held without bail pending first appearance in court.

== Vanguard soldiers thwart shuttle terror ==

SAN ANGELES, EARTH – Two off-duty Vanguard soldiers thwarted a die-hard Texas Republican separatist who tried to use a plastic gun to assault passengers aboard a shuttle from Earth to Mars. The attacker, identified as Trump Dixon, 26, of Waco, reportedly shouted “Freedom for Texas” before waving his weapon and preparing to fire on fellow passengers. The soldiers, whose names have not yet been released, tackled Dixon and disarmed him before anyone could be hurt.Dixon is now in custody in San Angeles, awaiting interrogation by Consortium authorities.Troubles with the Texas Republic seemed over nearly a century ago, but fringe elements still rise up like this on occasion.
