Korean Peninsula – Reunification: (Entry submitted by Eunji and approved by Brody)

The history of the 21st century on the Korean peninsula is defined similarly to the latter half of the 20th century, the separation of the southern and northerns halves of the Korean Peninsula as the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, respectively.

The RoK continued to become more connected to the rest of Earth. Within Asia, the RoK became known for its extensive media output. The RoK government actively supported this as a form of soft power, that is to say diplomatic and cultural influence. Other technological industries continued to grow as well.

The DPRK, on the other hand, made only minor overtures towards the outside world. Legally, communication and media equipment was still highly regulated. Access to information on the world outside of the DPRK was restricted mostly to the elites as the Kim dynasty continued to rule. However, since the late 20th century, the DPRK’s position eroded with the end of the Soviet Union and thus the end of one of the country’s major patrons, leaving only China as a patron who controlled aid to the country on a much tighter level.

Conflict between the two nations was mostly limited to minor skirmishes on the coasts of the peninsula between naval forces and the occassional artillery barrages from the DPRK aimed at sparsely populated regions, with the RoK retaliating in kind.

When Earth was unified in the 22nd century, the DPRK was one of the few countries that refused to join. With the Chinese having joined, the DPRK was denied any meaningful outside support that could not be smuggled in by its few remaining sympathizers. Within ten years of Earth’s unification, the DPRK collapsed as over a century and a half of totalitarian policies and now the lack of external support had rendered the northern half of the peninsula nearly uninhabitable.

Unfortunately, this was not without its costs, as some DPRK commanders near the southern border ordered their artillery batteries pointed at Seoul to fire. Many of these artillery pieces were over 100 years old at that point, and most failed to fire. Those that did caused thousands of deaths within Seoul.

The new unified Earth government stepped in, bearing the costs of integrating the former DPRK into the government. It was the first major humanitarian crisis on Earth the unified government had to face, as over 20 million people were in horrific conditions from starvation, malnutrition, and the brutal treatment of the former government. Integration into the unified Earth’s government was an arduous undertaking, taking nearly 50 years before the Earth government’s aid finally ended. After nearly 200 years, Korea was united once again, this time as a political entity within the Earth government.

    The Korean Peninsula today

By 2650, the Korean Peninsula has been largely integrated as a small part of the wider Stellar Consortium. Those living on the Peninsula speak Terran, follow Stellar Consortium culture and the scars of 200 years of separation no longer in the memories of anyone living, but a topic discussed among historians and other academics. While for some time after the unification process began there was a stigma against being from the north or having had ancestors from the north, that has largely faded as well.
