System

In the far flung southwestern corner of known space - and sharing a border with the Hekayti in the Cristata Nebula - Materia Syna and its sibling planets inhabit the system of same name as the nebula they border. This particular area of space is considered the frontier with a plethora of natural resources, but is also known to harbor Hekayti pirates and their bases.

Sun

Cristata is a main sequence, type G star, slightly hotter but with the same luminosity of Sol. Similar to Sol, it has an inner core of hydrogen and helium, with a thin photosphere surrounded by its chromosphere and corona.

Planets

The Cristata system has five planets; Materi Syna, Libernum, Cristata 3, Cristata 4, and Sandmother. While Materi Syna, Cristata 3 and 4 are habitable, Libernum is a dead planet and Sandmother a gas giant, both of which are used for natural resources.

Moons

Most scientists on Materi Syna agree that at one point in the planet's history, it had two moons in orbit, considering the series of rings the planet now has which is most likely what's left of the first satellite. The other has been named Perseverance.

History

Modern History

  • May 2652 CE - Vadim Tostanavich, on a routine scouting trip for asteroids with valuable minerals, comes across the Cristata system on the fringes of known space. Encountering engine problems, he is forced down on Cristata 2, a habitable planet.
  • June 2652 CE - Razorback Cliffwalker and Joshua MacNamara arrive to repair Tostanavich's ship. The three decide with the emptiness of the system and abundance of resources, to colonize the planet. It it is dubbed Materi Syna, translated from Mierznykovy meaning Mother's Son.
  • July 2652 CE - Ground is broken on the founding of the Orion Confederacy and New Resilience. Outversers begin to migrate to the frontier world to help in building their own place in Hiverspace.
  • July 2652 CE - Dean, Overmind of the New Phyrrian Enclave approaches the Confederacy to join the fledgling country, agreeing to help build and protect New Resilience in exchange for having a place of their own. Resistance at first, but is welcomed in the end.

Geography

Materi Syna has two main continents with many smaller series of island chains.

Continents

Major Cities

  • New Resilience - Capital of the Orion Confederacy and the first city that begun the colonization of the planet.
  • New Phyrria - City built for the Phyrrians on Materi Syna that is located close by, if not joined with New Resilience. Founded in July 2653 CE.

Flora

Materi Syna is largely a planet of coniferous forests. Most of the trees are cone-producing and have needle-shaped leaves that lack sap, which keeps them from freezing in the harsh winters. Spruces, firs, pines, aspens, and beech trees are thick around the wide lakes that dot the untamed landscape. Ferns, moss, mushrooms and ivy make up the spongy undergrowth of the forests, home to many burrowing fauna. For reasons that have not been made entirely clear, a strain of Muscipulan plants thrive beneath the thicker canopies.

  • Chewip Fern - A stationary Muscipulan fern with multiple modified leaves that prey on insects.
  • Daysclick - A sour plant with green blossoms, increases stamina.
  • Daisywater - A pure white plant with curling leaves, counters poisoning.
  • Podberry-856K6 - A plant bearing blue, poisonous pods, named by the Phyrrian tasker who discovered it.
  • Oppiewood - A stiff-stemmed plant with red-and-purple berries that relieves pain and helps with sleeping.
  • Billiweed - A mobile, Muscipulan plant that walks on its roots, preying on small rodents.
  • Honeybell
  • Vugnid - A thorned plant, yellow roots, a sedative.
  • Stripe cap - A striped fungus that treats depression.
  • Grage (horehound) - crinkled gray-leaved plant, somewhat resembling mint in appearance, and are covered in downy hairs. The flowers are white.
  • Sarawhey - A violet, flexible, soft plant with serrated leaves and blue flowers.
  • Keserunaran - Greenish brown shriveled citrus-like fruit. Very bitter but nutritious and antibiotic.

Fauna

Taiga

Crine
  • Crine - A monotreme-like badger creature, about 4 feet in height. Extremely aggressive, it is one of the top predators of Materi Syna's taigas. Largely nocturnal, it burrows during the day and lays leathery eggs in batches of 3. It attacks with its powerful jaws and lengthy hind claws, preferring the cervine-like creatures that live along rivers.
  • Kreekute
  • Zerkalovolk (mirrorwolves) Little is known about these powerful creatures, but what is obvious is that they are extremely deadly. They are nearly invisible to the eye and even infrared visual aids are little help in detecting them. Thus far, they have only been documented as solitary hunters or in groups of two or three, though rumor whispers of packs as large as thirty. They are extremely fast and strong with massive fangs and claws.
  • Hurnger
Misquw
  • Miqsuw - Another riverside predator, the misquw is semi-aquatic and feeds on fish when it cannot prey on larger ungulates. It's fur is short and dense, and it has bright orange flesh, extremely muscular jaws and dual spines. Bony spurs jut from it's heels, used to gore.
  • Poswya
  • Untzbur
  • Iskight
Ostryiyazyk
  • Ostryiyazyk (sharp-tongue) - A reptilian creature with opposable thumbs and a lengthy, muscular tongue lined with sticky substance and barbs. Males have thicker spines on their backs. Primarily land animals but hunt in the canopies as well.
  • Oughin
  • Polhono
  • Elmendi
  • Broadback An extremely large herbivore resembling a land-dwelling plesiosaur. It stretches up to fifty feet long, fifteen feet wide, and twelve feet tall when it's neck is fully extended forward. It is found mostly in the mountains where it uses its long neck to reach into caves to consume algae and lichens within. It has no teeth, but immense crushing and grinding surfaces at the front of its mouth, as well as an extremely caustic saliva that allows it to burrow through the rock to reach new caverns within. They are solitary creatures, but sometimes females can be found with one or two young. They have no natural predators except for large groups of Zerkalovolk.
