Personal History

Catherine Roux, alias Calico Kate was born to a black slave on a Haitian tobacco plantation. She was the daughter of a house slave and the Master Francios Laroche. She remembers very little of this, however, because she was sold at age 4 to the Roux banana plantation.

Catherine was treated brutally there. She was given barely enough food to survive and treated violently both physically and sexually. Catherine started dressing as a boy in order to avoid the abuse visited upon her around age seven or eight. She has scars on her face from smallpox,a disease which she barely survived.

When Catherine began puberty, she ran away from the plantation and took ship as cabin boy aboard the Revenge with Captain John Gow. Catherine proved a strong and able seaman but her gender was discovered by Captain John who took her as his lover. Catherine grew in skill and cunning becoming an able pirate and a capable sailor. She moved from ship to ship roaming the Caribbean and gaining a reputation as a fearsome brawler and a dead shot with a pistol. She stopped pretending to be a man long ago but she still prefers mens clothing.

Catherine earned the nickname Calico Kate for a prank pulled upon her by her shipmates. Catherine passed out after drinking a prodigious amount of rum and woke up dressed as a “proper woman”. The punishment of the men was a solid thrashing when she found each of them alone and such a prank was never pulled again.

Catherine spends her ill gotten gains gambling, drinking and, when she can find a man who is not repelled by her scars, having sex. She stays away from drugs after seeing what opium does to people in China. She has a coarse sense of humor and fine wit can be lost on her. Her education is one of survival and violence. Calico Kate will kill without remorse but only if she must. Like most pirates she prefers an easy mark to violence. Calico Kate is deeply superstitious and believes in witches and ghosts. She is mistrustful, streetwise and cunning.

Calico Kate is a loyal friend and hard worker. She is very protective and will die for someone who has been a real friend to her. She is intelligent if not educated and has a finite command of battlefield strategy. For her being a pirate is the best life; She is treated as a social equal, gets a fair share of the loot and gets to sail the lovely mystical sea. She has traveled the world and her dress choices reflect colorful and practical items from around old earth in the late seventeenth century.

Calico Kate has had 5 children 2 of which survived childbirth and all from different fathers. They have all been sent to orphanages and Calico Kate does not dwell on them. She does not plan for the future because for her the line between life and death is tenuous and immediate. She is small sized due to malnutrition (4'11”) and does not know how old she is because of the circumstances of her birth. A rough guess places Calico Kate in her late twenties though she looks older due to exposure to the sun and sea. She is what I would call “proto-vodoo” in religious belief, a mix of island tradition and Catholicism.

Calico Kate was rifted to Comorro Station very recently while she was passed out after a drunken bender in Port Royal.
