Established in 2602, the center is named after Barbara Engel. Engel served as a Vanguard field medic on the blood-soaked sands of Mars during the Demaria-Zangali War in 2363. She treated patients on both sides of the conflict, as well as fellow Vanguard personnel wounded in the crossfire, but gained fame by saving the life of a prominent Demarian military leader, Battleclaw Grayfur Sandwalker, just before she was shot by one of Sandwalker's aides who misunderstood her intentions.
This incident led directly to a ceasefire and talks that resulted in the Treaty of Torricelli on Ganymede, ending the war.
