New Alhira spaceport set to open

Posted By: Brody Article: JAN08-1 Reported To: INN Reported On: Demaria Reported At: Sun Jan 06 18:02:20 3008 NEW ALHIRA, DEMARIA - Demarian officials today announced that they would gradually open up the New Alhira Spaceport to general civilian traffic in response to the Overmind's recent announcement. The move follows the gradual resettlement of the city, which officials hope will be completed by the end the work. The spaceport itself is projected to open January 9th.The return to normalcy on Demaria may be the first signs of a real peace in the Orion Arm, but it is not without its problems for the tiny colony. Experts at the University of Enaj believe that the short absence from galactic activity may have far reaching consequences for the colony. "Economically, it's a nightmare." Professor of Macroeconomics Edward Athog-Exas told INN. "This war was a bust in terms of actual combat. We all know why the Demarians went into hiding, and no one can fault them for wanting to preserve their species. But while they were gone trade routes remained open. The inroads that the Demarians made into the galactic economy; attracting investors, securing trade and supply contracts, tourism, all that has been wiped out by the Phyrrians who didn't even have to fire a shot. The galaxy kept going, Demaria stopped. That's an economic death sentence."INN Wire Service

Castor Struggles To Recover From Phyrrian Attack

Posted By: Fishbreath Article: JAN08-2 Reported To: INN Reported On: Castor Reported At: Sat Jan 26 01:11:59 3008 For Castor, recovery from the Phyrrian attacks is proving to be a slow and painful process. The attacks in October have resulted in the deaths of over five million Castori - a third of the population - and seriously crippled all aspects of this technology-driven economy. Aid efforts have been welcomed but hampered both by a lack of awareness on the part of the international community and by the scarcity of functioning spaceports to handle the necessary traffic. As on Waldheim, the Phyrrians unleashed nanite weapons on ships, electronic devices, and other machines to devastating effect. Subsequent attacks included forest-clearing nuclear weapons in the largely uninhabited northern latitudes, targeted bombing of spaceport facilities and raids on major cities seeking superconductors, refined metals, and the remains of high-tech devices. Castori government officials also report that they have disabled Phyrrian terraforming installations that were attempting to render the environment more machine-friendly by removing the carbon dioxide that sustains the four thousand foot tall banyan forests.Councils of Sages have seen to the restoration of communications and power in their cities, but manufacturing infrastructure and public transportation in outlying areas remain shaky. All hospitals remain crowded and are experiencing shortages of drugs, while smaller hospitals are suffering outbreaks of disease where improvised low-tech sterilization and insect repelling methods have failed. Doctor Chimsin Gwinube, a hospital administrator in Ursiniru, declined to speak with INN reporters but offered her assurance that conditions in Castor's hospital system are improving. A well-organized disaster preparedness plan has contributed to other good news. Any serious food shortages have so far been prevented by rationing measures the Pansagia has passed.High Sage Umikich Chachiramun has been effectively directing the remains of the Pansagia until it can elect a successor to the late Ubercast Nirikin. According to government sources, the annual elections in late February will proceed as planned. Chachiramun stands by his scathing rebuke this November of his pacifist planet's largely absent allies. However, recent remarks have softened somewhat. "The citizens of Ungstir, Waldheim, and New Luna are mourning. As the Orion Arm makes peace with the new Overmind, we of Castor ask that you keep us in your hearts as well."
