On Matters of Footwear

Summary: Rachael and Newt discuss the importance of proper footwear in their lines of work.

Cast: Rachael, Newt

Air Date: May 29, 2011

Setting: Downtown - Eiru, Pyracan

Consisting of four main streets with a combination goverment/law enforcement building in the center, building here is still somewhat sparse, though pleasingly landscaped and with a great view of the teal sea. Save for the aforementioned government/law enforcement building, a sanitation facility, and a desalination facility, the Outversers have been left to their own devices in creating infrastructure. Fused sand pathways lead up the hill to the Residential district above, and down to the water's edge.

Rachael is standing in a crouched position overlooking the beach, making the small woman look even smaller than usual.

Newt comes in from the residential district, walking an invisible tightrope. He seems to head just straight for the beach until he spots you and changes direction. "Heya."

"Good morning!" Rachael says in her usual cheery tone. "So how are you this morning?"

Newt replies, "Pretty good. Been exploring and stuff. This place is overly pink."

"Talking about the sand?" Rachael asks. "Doesn't surprise me, some places have weird colored sand and such. Though you probably don't know too much about that kind of thing if you walk around in a spacesuit like that for most of the time."

Newt cocks his head slightly, "Why do you think that?"

"I don't know, why'd you wear a spacesuit on a planet surface unless you're immunocompromised or something? I think. I saw a movie about that once but I'm not really an expert." Rachael continues.

Newt ohs and shrugs. "I like it. I think it's cool."

"Oh!" Rachael says. "That's okay!" she announces. "It's the same reason I like my robes and swords. A Lotorian the othe day was telling me how out of date they are and I agreed but I still like them anyway."

Newt nods, smiling, "Yeah. Like that." He shrugs, "I've always liked my suit."

"I even kept the footwear!" Rachael jokes, pulling up a bit of her robe just enough to reveal that she is, in fact, wearing wooden sandal-like shoes at the moment.

Newt raises his eyebrows. "Are they, like, made of wood?!"

"Of course they are!" Rachael says. "The robes wouldn't be complete without the appropriate footwear." she says brightly.

Newt looks from them to his and back again. "I think mine are more comfortable. Are those comfortable?"

"You get used to them." Rachael answers. Then a pause and she lowers his voice, "If I know I'm doing something real dangerous, I wear proper sneakers. Don't go telling everyone that though!"

Newt grins and nods, "Totally." He sits down nearby, arranging his legs infront of him so that his boots stick out. Nice, shiny and dark green. "My boots are pretty cool. They're useful all over the place.

"I know plenty of people who use boots." Rachael says with a nod. "They just never feel right for me."

Newt says, looking at his, twisting his legs slightly so that they tap each other a couple of times. "Yea? I couldn't imagine wearing anything else." He pauses. "Well I can but it'd just be /totally/ weird."

"Boots are kind of heavy. They just don't feel right when you're trying to run or jump." Rachael explains to Newt. "But maybe that's because most people who seem to like boots are bigger than me."

Newt looks over at you for a moment and then back, "You're about my size and stuff. I reckon you've not had the right ones is all."

"Maybe not!" Rachael admits. "But I don't know, it wouldn't look right. So untraditional!" she complains, seeming a bit self mocking about this.

Newt hmms, "I guess that's fair enough. Kinda part of the feeling weird thing I guess."

"I know some people would use heavier boots and try to kick their way out of trouble. It's like putting rings on your fingers or something if that's what you do." Rachael explains. "I'm from Sivad, sortof, so a lot of weapons were frowned on."

Newt ohs. "I just wear em cos they're part of the suit and look pretty cool by themselves." He thinks for a moment, "Plus they're good if someone wants to kick you in the shins."

"Yeah, shin kicking isn't very nice." Rachael agrees, though she keeps looking down at the beach. "Such a weird place to crash land." she finally says.

Newt nods, "Totally not nice." He looks over at the beach, "It is?"

"I don't know much about crash landings and I'm not really an expert on designing ships, but if you were going to crash land, why not do it on the water where you'd be able to make a softer landing if you have a good pilot? Or maybe it's a crash thing." Another pause from the small woman, "It's not like I paid attention in my physics classes!"

Newt replies, "Well *I* would've if I could've but... was it falling like a rock? You know, no control. At all."

"I actually don't know." Rachael admits. "I'd have to go out and talk to people and investigate that kind of thing." she explains. "And I'm smarter than to go around somewhere asking sensitive questions like that."

Newt nods, "Fair enough. I heard things got pretty nasty here."

"And I don't get paid to ask those questions, so let's not worry about them right now, okay?" Rachael says, then changes the topic, "Pink sand, you said?"

Newt grins but drops that subject and nods, "/Everywhere/."

"Wonder what causes it. Once again, I didn't pay attention in the class that explained this kind of thing." Rachael admits. "It was boring stuff about rocks, okay!"

Newt hehs, "I liked learning about rocks. Is important and I reckon there's a lotta iron oxide in the sand."

"Oh." Rachael says, then she shrugs, "Don't know much about that either. I just know it's sand."

Newt asks, "What sorta stuff did you learn about?"

"All kinds of other things. Lot of martial training. Not very useful in everyday life though." Rachael admits. "I've read history books, that counts for something, right? I wasn't too bad at that."

Newt nods, "Uhuh. I liked maths and stuff but it was interesting hearing about stuff that happened in the past and everything."

"I'm supposed to come up with some wise sounding quote right now, but I can't." Rachael admits, then she stands to her full height. "Anyway, I'm going to go ask a few questions even though I know it's a bad idea, so see you later, okay?"

Newt looks over at you, "Sure. Hope you ask the right people and stuff."
