Combined Armed Forces Ranks

Navy

  • Ainneartaigh: Leader of the Fleet. There are one of these officers at any given time in the Pyracan military. And while the military has become more open to non-Pyracani, this post has always been held by a Pyracani. They are in charge of all fleet operations, reporting directly to the Grand Council. They have never been lost in combat.
  • Ainneart: Commander of a Theater. There are a number of these officers, based on the needs of the military. The rank is given to the most senior giogann in a theater or to the giogann with the most experience in that theater of operations or dealing with that specific threat. It is a fluid system, but the rank has only been revoked twice due to horrible decisions on the part of the ainneart. It is a temporary rank only meant to last as long as the emergency calls for command of that level in a specific system.
  • Giogann: Commander of several ships. This is the second highest of the permanent ranks for fleet personnel. Generally, in command of a battlecarrier or battleship space flight.
  • Laochaigh: Commander of a ship. This guy is in overall command of whatever ship.
  • Laoch: Vice-commander of a ship. The Laoch is in charge of the day to day stuff going on in the ship. They're the laochaigh's right and left hand. They deal heavily with logistics, planning, and supply.
  • Reubaigh: High-level NCO. This is a flexible rank. It is one that anyone with any brains should listen to. They exist in the murky depths of the chain of command, basically ranked as the officer they are paired to. Anyone of the above ranks other than maidsearr can appoint themselves a personal reubaigh. They're often in charge of significant numbers of reubs.
  • Reub: Mid-ranking shipmate or fighter pilot. They've been around the block, and they're competent. If you're not a specialist in their sphere, you should probably leave them alone to do their job.
  • Pronnasgaigh: Entry-level shipman with honors. These spacers have survived combat or a ritual designed to simulate it.
  • Pronnasg: Entry-level shipman. Bags of unspilled guts.

Marines

  • Ceannaigh: Leader of the marines. There are one of these officers at any given time in the Pyracan military. And while the military has become more open to non-Pyracani, this post has always been held by a Pyracani. They are in charge of all marine operations, reporting directly to the Grand Council. They have been lost in combat once.
  • Ceann: Leader of marines in a Theater. There are a number of these officers, based on the needs of the military. The rank is given to the most senior camhannaicht in a theater or to the one with the most experience in that theater of operations or dealing with that specific threat. It is a fluid system, but the rank has never been revoked. It is a temporary rank, designed to last as long as the system wide emergency.
  • Camhannaicht: Commander of a Venue. This is the second highest permanent rank for marine personnel. Generally, in command of the marine contingent on a battlecarrier or battleship space flight.
  • Sabhail: Leader of a 250 marine Casgairr. This is a catchall term for marine senior officers; although, with SF there is crossover into the realm of space flight. The sabhails are generally the highest ranking marines on any individual ship, and the number of marines and sabhails varies by the ship class and mission type.
  • Maidsearr: Leader of a Treun, made of 5 Sabaids, or a marine trainer, or leader of a Special Forces Danadas group. This is another catchall rank for marines. This rank has come up the ranks with the more senior leading treuns and the more junior generally serving as a training officer.
  • Ridirr: Special Forces marine. They would be magaigh were they not content in small team operations.
  • Magaigh: Leader of a 5-marine Sabaid. These guys and gals are the backbone of the marines, in charge of the day to day lives of the mags, daolaighs, and daols.
  • Mag: Mid-ranking space marine. Assist the magaighs in ensuring the daolaighs and daols don't become spilled bags of guts.
  • Daolaigh: Entry-level space marine with honors. These marines have survived combat or a ritual designed to simulate it.
  • Daol: Entry-level space marine. Bags of unspilled guts.

Uniforms

The undress uniform for the Pyracani is a grey kilt and shirt if they feel like it. The dress uniforms get significantly more fancy with feathers and totems and such. Somebody should write them up. I'm leaning towards a British Army type deal with individual uniform variations based on the 12 nations and tradition.

The formalist of the Pyracani dress uniforms involves wearing the traditional scaith with accompanying kilt based on the twelve nations of Pyracan. The uniforms are generally embellished further with bracers and greaves. Pyracani military medals are distributed in a mix of rings, feathers, and various other bangles. Some of the bangles on the formal dress uniform date back to before the world of Pyracan was united.

Albhainn – Green and black plaid kilt, bronze greaves engraved with a spear toting warrior, bronze bracers engraved with satai, rikirr feathers hanging off greaves, scaith.

Chiarrain – Solid blue kilt, steel greaves, steel bracer (right arm only), scaith, black wood hotuk carved with individual family history, bronze shield.

Conmarra - Red and black plaid kilt, silver greaves engraved with Rickirriek riders, silver bracers engraved with crossed lances, bronze gorget, ceremonial sword.
