Background

Vernius Zahir, of the House Zahir, was born into the noble house to parents who were quite well off. Owning some small amount of land and controlling a fair number of vassals, his parents ensured that Vernius had every opportunity available to become something great given their wealth and influence within Fastheld and their family. Vernius' father, who was highly skilled and trained in alchemy and poisons, taught many within House Zahir ways in which one could incapacitate or even kill an enemy without drawing a blade. There was some rumors that Vernius' father was an assassin, but as far as everyone knows this was never confirmed before his fathers 'mysterious' death when Vernius was of age.

While growing up, and under the tutelage of his father, Vernius would often dress as a common man and explore the city, seeing it through eyes that most nobles would never see. During this time, he learned much from many shady individuals - criminals, brigands, thieves and assassins. He would eventually use what he learned from these people, along with the knowledge passed down by his father, to further his own agenda. While he became active in the activities, and goings on within House Zahir, Vernius did not let anything get in his way. At the age of 28, he carefully poisoned and killed a merchant who had threatened to expose him and some of the shady dealings he was getting himself into. This would be the first of many indiscretions that could cause Vernius to be in hot water.

Rumors, over the years, would float around the noble Houses that Vernius may have been involved with an assassins guild, and had a commoner or merchant personae that he relied on when he travelled the streets - neither of which were ever confirmed. He maintains a mysterious lifestyle to those on the outside, but when in public and representing House Zahir he is elegant and is often charismatic and charming. Those who get to know him privately have said he is somewhat sadistic, quick to anger and can be dangerous.
