You're Hired!

Summary: Not quite what she was expecting, but things are looking up for Nuku, also, jazz.

Cast: Nuku, Vessa, Kethren, Parker, Tharsis, Rukais, Norran

Air Date: 05 March 2654

Setting: Eiru, Pyracan

About two dozen fifty gallon barrels have been lashed with ropes to a series of wooden pallets and anchored with large stones, giving the town a crude, flimsy dock. As it has a tendency to sway in the wind and shake when stepped-upon, it's hardly a permenent solution. A fused sand path leads towards town.

The docks are nearing completion, with the tied barrels now covering only one section of beach, and suspended by chains connected to winches so that they can be easily raised and moved out of the way of some underwater project.

Solid support beams, dark green and easily a foot in diameter, support the docks at low tide, sunk through the sand and stone and into the bedrock beneath. The docks are only accessible when the tide is high enough to allow passage over the outer reefs. Stout chains forged of the same material support suspended walkways that bear on their underside cylinders of some likely floating material, so that the docks can adapt to unusually high or low water levels. The walkways extend to and curve around the beach, allowing for several different sizes of watercraft to berth.

Along one curve of beach, a large building of the same dark green material has been erected, an archway dipping into the waters to allow craft to be drawn in for dry docking and repair services, or shelter from ocean storms. The building has apparently been situated with care to deflect the dominant winds of the area away from it, making it more difficult to damage in a storm.

A short distance down from the green building is a second one, this easily described as a warehouse and made of solid gray cement blocks. It is the smaller of the two, but still of a good size. Large doors at one end open directly into the water while a crane is situated just inside the building.

Seryn spends one more moment in irritated scientist mode before smiling brightly, "Well alright then," she nods and shakes a finger to Keth, "But while a measure of paranoia is helpful, ye canna let it rule ye eh? Otherwise ye will never have the chance to really /live/. Ye are in a whole new universe, there are endless possibilities here for adventure and excitement of all types. Dun let it hold ye back." she grins wider then says to Tharsis, "I wish ye a good trip through the rift an back Mister Tharsis."

"You've got a standing invitation to come along if you want." Tharsis says with a grin. Kethren nods As I said, it does sound like an interesting trip. Right now though, I've got plenty of *this* universe left to see, so I'm not too worried about hitching a ride."

Norran arrives from Eastern Settlement.

Seryn goes wide eyed and is about to answer when her PDA starts singing, checking it she meeps and hops off, "I shall take ye up on that Mister Tharsis, I gotta run for the moment but I shall return." She runs off with a wave.

Seryn has left.

One of the many ferries that travel between Aureus and Eiru slowly docks into the port, deck hands jumping out and making to rope it in place while the passengers hustle towards the exit ramp prematurely. Amongst them is James Rukais, smoking a pipe, smoking hot. He gives his head a bit of a rub, as another settler pushed past to exit first.

Tharsis nods to Seryn as she takes off. "Trouble with being a ship one's self, you tend to see everything pretty fast." he says to Kethren.

Nuku has arrived.

Kethren nods to Tharsis "Ah. I'd been wondering about your general transparentness. That *would* speed up the seeing everything process alright."

The ferries boarding ramp is lowered carefully onto the dock and passengers start to leave, Rukais hangs back a little to let the majority of the crowd disembark before he joins them on solid land.

Tharsis and Kethren are somewhere, doing something as Seryn heads away at a pace.

From over in the direction of the settlement strolls Sheriff Lomasa, making his way down the sandy path toward the construction site. He takes a look over...whatever is actually going on, hands in his pockets as he peers around the site.

Nuku approaches, emerging from a building with a straw basket from which potentially tasty scents escape from beneath a white cloth. Her eyes sweep across the area alertly as she goes, though she doesn't seem to have a clear destination in mind.

Over near a small rock outcropping, a saxophone player plays a jazzy version of 'Sitting on the Dock of the Bay', apparently oblivious to what's happening around him.

Tharsis nods. "Well, I guess I need to 'get back to myself' as it were. Been nice chatting." he says, standing up from the crate and starting to head back towards the eastern settlement.

Kethren nods to Tharsis "So long, have a nice day, and so forth." then notices all the new people arriving and waves from the crate he's sitting on. "Mornin!"

Is that Jazz? Why, Rukais likes Jazz! Well, he probably doesn't like the sound of it, but the idea of sitting with a Jazz player while smoking a pipe in a jacket and fedora would certainly appeal. He makes his way towards the street musician, passing by those handing seat-crates as he does.

Nuku has no idea what the heck Jazz is, but that's an interesting sound, and reason enough for her to veer off from her non-destination towards it and scope out its source. A furry hand dips into her basket and pulls out a meat filled roll from within, chewing it as she watches.

The saxophone player wraps up the song with a wild improvisation, only briefly touching on the melody line, like a stone skipping on the surface of a lake. The piece ends high and wild before quickly sinking into a final, fading note. Finally opening his eyes, John Parker seems somewhat surprised to find a small group gathering to listen. "Mornin' folks," he says brightly.

Kethren nods to Parker "Morning, John." and sees Nuku is back "Hey there! Any luck finding people yet?""

Norran glances over to where Parker is playing some sort of bizarre-looking horn, but otherwise shrugs and looks back over the site. Not seeing any obvious violations or case of horrific workplace death, the Sheriff considers his job complete for the moment and strolls over toward the outcropping to see what all the fuss is about.

Nuku nods towards the jazz player before looking towards Kethren, "I found food," Easily enough proved as she takes another bite of the meaty snack, "Won't do any good going to an interview looking like I'm ready to bite their hand as soon as shake it."

John Parker shifts on the rock somewhat and seems to be settling into his element. He adjusts the fedora on his head slightly forward and holds the silver saxophone at the ready. "Well, folks, any requests?"

Kethren nods to Nuku "Reasonable precaution, really." and looks thoughtful at Parker "Flight of the Bumblebee?" he says with a slight smirk.

The pilot stares at the musician for a moment, looking up at the fedora in silence as he takes a toke or two on his pipe. "What era do you know?" he queries, pipe sat in the corner of his mouth.

"Those are specific songs?" Nuku asks before reproaching herself, "Of course they are. Where from? I don't recognize them." Chomp, the last of that roll is gone, and a wide tongue licks her furry snout clean.

"Welcome to Eiru Settlement, f, hm, folks?" greets Norran as he nears the party, stumbling somewhat on the last word as if it's something he's really not used to saying. "I'm Sheriff Lomasa - don't worry, I'm not here to scare you off, just make sure you stay away from the site. A lot of large metal objects and things flying around and whatnot." Norran then indicates Parker's sax, giving an incline of his head toward it. "Don't mean to interrupt further than that, but that's quite an interesting horn you've got. Never seen any like it."

The musican considers the multiple questions with a bit of a smirk. "Well, I mostly know what I think it generally known as the 'Big Band' era from Earth, 20th century. 'Course then it was just 'popular music' to me. I've listened to a lot of what came out of that - bebop, free jazz, all that, and like it a lot too. Pretty sorry the rift made me miss out on it actually." He considers Kethren's request, then nods, without much hesitation. "Yeah, we can do that." And he launches into the frenetic pace of a Jazzy version of the 'Flight of the Bumblebee' - not only is the musician hitting the rapid pace of the song, he's also improvising in the little spaces inbetween.

[Skill System] Parker tests his Performance + Instruments at a modifier of 0. The result is 14.

Kethren grins and claps a few times "Didn't really expect you to try. Not the easiest instrument to do that piece on."

Nuku listens to the rapid tooting a moment before her attention snaps to the gentleman that said, "Sheriff?" she steps closer, "Hello. I'm Nuku," she introduces. Would that her sort had a tail, it would be a wagging, "I'm looking for work. They said you might have use for a metalworker or a weaponsmith perhaps?" A hopeful expression.

A small crowd made up of people who were on the dock and those just coming off the local ferry have now gathered around Parker as he plays his Saxophone.

Rukais keeps a steady stack of sweet smelling smoke rising from both his pipe and from between his lips. As Parker starts on his next song he glances sideways at Norran, "Might have to wait until the next round, Sherrif." he grins, adjusting the pipe across to the other corner of his mouth before leaning back against a lamppost. He falls silent again.

Vessa wanders into the Docks, following the sounds of Jazz music. She looks around the gathering with raised eyebrows of surprise, "Wow, busy day at the docks."

It being a fast, short piece, the jazz version of "Flight of the Bumblebee" is quickly finished with a rapid and jaunty flourish. He finishes and doffs his hat in a small bow in one quick, smooth motion. "Any other requests?" He then acknowledges the Sheriff, "Sorry, Sheriff, didn't mean to ignore you. Just like to finish once I've started you might say. If I'm causing a problem, just let me know. Last thing I want to do is get somone hurt." He raises up the slightly tarnished silver sax. "This is my lady and my friend, sheriff. A silver Conn brand Saxophone. We go everywhere together, even when I was flying over Germany."

Kethren nods at the piece's completion. "Very nicely done. I'll have to try harder next time" and grins. Then notices Vessa coming in "Hey boss!"

With Nuku's questioning, Norran isn't too bothered about Parker's response. He looks toward her with a thoughtful look, scratching his chin as he thinks. "Metalworker or weaponsmith, hm? Well, the Sheriff's office isn't really in that sort of business. I don't have anything personally, but I can ask around. I'm sure whoever's running this site might be more helpful."

As Parker responds, Norran gives a grin. "Not necessary, unless you plan on playing under the cranes," dismisses Norran, quirking a brow at his reply. "Huh. Well, I can't say I've heard of any of those. I've seen stranger things than that horn since I've gotten here, that's for certain. You're some sort of bard, then? Or is it just a hobby? I play the fiddle, myself. Not very well, but I'm fair at it."

Dissapointment reads clearly on Nuku's body, "Ah. Do you happen to know who or whom that would be then?" A pause, and she digs out another meat roll from her basket, offering it up towards Norran. The short female smiling, "Want one?"

Rukais holds back a sort of pipe-adjusted snigger at the sheriff's mention of playing the fiddle. Of course, holding in a breath prompts a cough and he leans forward, taking the pipe in one hand as he wipes one eye. "Heh." he manages.

The jazz musican laughs with a booming baritone. "Not too likely, Mr. Sheriff," he replies. "I guess I'm sort of a Bard - at least when I don't have a permanent gig lined up. But I'm also a pilot. I find that tends to pay the bills a little better, even if it's not my primary line of work." He looks around. "Well, any requests, then, or should I let the muse take me?"

Vessa waves to Keth and then those around and to Keth says, "You sent something about someone looking for a job?" She nods to Parker, "Heya John," then nods to Norran, "You work for the Sheriff? I haven't seen him around lately." She waves to Rukais, "Hey good to see you again,"

Kethren nods to Vessa "Nuku there was hoping to find something. Wasn't sure if we actually had any openings, but she seems nice enough, and is certainly enthusiastic."

"My apologies, mistress. Like I said, I'd be glad to ask around for you. I'm certain someone on the council could have something - there's a lot of construction going on in Eiru these days," explains Norran to Nuku with an apologetic smile, taking the roll gratefully. "I think I shall, thank you very much," he says as he munches down on the roll contentedly. As Vessa speaks, Norran gives her a grin. "You got that partly right. Don't work for the Sheriff, I /am/ the Sheriff," explains the man, indicating the badge holder on his belt with a tap of his finger. "You're talking about Lyddmull Seamel, I imagine. We come from the same country, you could say, and my...family has known his for centuries. I used to be the Sheriff a year ago, and he took up the mantle while I took some personal time away. And now that he's off, I'm doing the same."

Nuku nods lightly, "I would appreciate that," she assures, "And if you'd like a new blade, just point me to a proper forge and I'll make something you can be proud of," she glances around a moment, "I may look a little bristle furred, but I don't back down from a promise, and I don't do less than perfect goods," she says with some amount of pride outmeasuring her small stature.

Parker shrugs. "All right, then." He smiles, makes some small adjustments to the reed to tune it, then launches into a turn of his own composition. "This is called Seaside," he says. "Seems appropriate." The tune is rolling, gentle and peaceful, but with an undercurrent of strength and power just beneath the simple notes.

[Skill System] Parker tests his Performance + Instruments at a modifier of 0. The result is 12.

Rukais glances up at Vessa from his position, leant forwards so he doesn't sputter out at anyone. He grins, "Well /hello/." he manages, sound a little winded, before he reaches up to pat down his hat as he leans forward, "You're looking good," There might even be a hint of a smile along with that, "Drawn by the music?"

Vessa looks in surprise at Norran then grins, "Ah well good to meet you then, I am Vessa. He was setting up a wilding hunt before he went wherever he went, let me know if you are taking that over. I sniper quite well, and am a fair shot otherwise." She nods to Keth, "Ah I see," to Nuku she says, "Hello to you, am I hearing right that you are a weaponsmith?" She grins at Rukais, "Why thank you, and yeah I heard some music and thought I would check it out. I don't hear music coming from the docks all that often."

Kethren quietly listens to the music, appreciating the touch of earth.

"Wildlings?" queries Norran, looking absolutely astonished. Then he remembers that being astonished is not very astonishing, so he quickly looks unimpressed. "Of course, wildlings," he sighs, giving a nod. "I suppose I'll have to, at some point. They can't be terribly dangerous if the entire island isn't dead yet, I suppose. I should talk to someone about that," he surmises, taking another munch on his meat roll and strolling away back toward town. "Light keep you all, a pleasure meeting you," he notes in farewell, giving a wave over his shoulder.

Nuku looks towards the furless one and nods at her, "If it involves using the fingers," she says, "Did you need anything?" She looks at Vessa with renewed hope. Bristle furred, that's her. At Norran's parting note, she looks over to him, "Light keep you," she returns the blessing, watching him go a moment before looking back at Vessa.

Parker wraps up the song with a low sonorous note, that seems to blend and fade into the actual sound of the waves on the shore. He takes his saxophone from his lips, and licks them slightly, eyes still closed. "That one makes me think of home," he whispers to himself, more than anyone near him.

"Pretty rare to hear anything that isn't coming through a speaker, up on station." Rukais replies, he stretches his back out as he stands, stretching his arms out forward before he falls still, a little looser than before. Brown eyes look bleakly outwards as Vessa and Nuku talk between themselves.

Vessa waves to Norran, "And you new;y returned Sheriff." To Nuku she says, "Possibly, do you do anything beyond weapons and armor? At this time my head of security covers that field but I wouldn't mind helping to set you up in a shop of your own if that interests you."

Kethren keeps listening to the music, but watches everyone with a certain amount of interest.

Oh boy oh boy oh boy. Play it cool. Nuku stands up straight, "I can make anything I have the parts for," she assures, "But I don't take charity," she holds up a fuzzy hand, "I'll rightly pay off any debt and work for what I earn, not take."

The musican moves his tongue around in his mouth, like his tounge is dry. He sets down the saxophone in the open case and produces a small bottle of water. He takes a drink and swallows. "Sorry, everyone. I need to take a bit of a break. I'll play some more again later.

"So you're from Earth?" Rukais manages, turning away from Vessa and Nuku as the musician stops playing his music. "Is that hat authentic?"

The musican dusts off said hat as it's mentioned. "Well, it came over in my saxophone case though the rift, so I guess it's about as authentic as you can get," he says with a smile.

Vessa nods as she takes the offered fuzzy hand, "Sounds fair to me." She indicates Kethren, "He is my architect and we can see about building you a shop. You work with him to set up a layout and design and you can pay me back as you get income. If you want to pay it back with work or items rather then credits then that works for me too." She grins, "Welcome to the Danu family."

Kethren nods to Vessa and Nuku "Be happy to build one for ya."

A hand falls over the pipe, smothering it slowly as Rukais holds it to his chest. "Nice. For me, it's about as classic as clothing comes. So, naturally," he tips his own.

"Of course," the jazz musican replies, echoing the gesture. "Come look me up at the Bull sometime in town. I've been staying there. I'd love to chat. In the meantime," he says, as he shuts his case and stands, "I'd better go find myself some lunch. Pleasure to play for you all."
