Picnic on the Teamhair

Summary: After quite a violent scene where Ladek was shot, Dement and Seryn calm down by eating together on top of the Teamhair.

Cast: Seryn, Dement, Rose and Alhambra.

Air Date: Sunday 11 March – 2654 AD

Setting: Lab – Teamhair

This area of the ship was once living quarters and elements of that are still visible, the bed, cupboards and some of the kitchen equipment is still all here. Of course, the bed now folds over into a workstation, the cupboards are full of electronics and laboratory equipment and whatever kitchen utensils there were have now been replaced with tools of scientific discovery. Where once there was an oven, there is now a gene sequencer, where once there was a hob, there is now a chemical vat, where once there was a fridge… well… there is a fridge, but it’s likely full up with samples and other science mumbo.

Dement is fixing himself a drink as Seryn reenters the ship, he looks across to her and sips it.

Seryn takes a moment to scan the readout briefly then look up to Dement and strides over. “Dinner? I brought wine.” Seems she is determined to have a good time and drag Dement into one as well.

“Uh.” Dement manages, past his drinking cup, “Okay… In the lab?”

Seryn grins, “As lovely as I am sure that would be, I think it might be a bit more hygienic in the kitchen area of living space. If ye have that o course.”

“Uh, this is the kitchen area.” Dement murmurs, “Or at least… I don’t get to cook much, anymore.. Do you have a kitchen on the farm?”

Seryn blinks and thinks about that and shakes her head, “I dunna if they do or not, I assume so but don’ want ta bother them. If this is where ye normally cook an eat then this will do me fine. I know the NIH would toss a fit an a half but the bastards are’na here are they?” She grins in fierce joy at that and adds again, “Bastards.” then looks around, “My only concern is contamination o they research. Have ya ever cooked over an open fire then? We could go on the far side o the ship and build a fire then cook there if ye are up for it.”

“Oh, there’s a heat sink in the engineering quad that works quite wonderfully as an oven.” Dement offers, “And I can prepare food without it going near the lab equipment. I.. We can have a picnic on the ship.” He nods.

A bright smile appears on Seryn’s face and her very person seems to exude cheer, “Wonderful, then that sounds like a perfect plan indeed. I brought a Pinot Grigio, I hope that will go well for what ye had in mind. I had a glass of this about a week ago an fell in love with the year an vintage.” She moves to pull out a bottle from the bag she brought with her and holds it out to Dement for inspection

Dement takes the bottle and looks down at it thoughtfully, “Cool.” he manages after a moment, handing it back. “Bottle opener is in the the cabinet under the chemical sequencer. Just… under all the rubber tubing.” he opens a cabinet he’s stood near and starts pulling out ingredients.

Seryn moves over to the cabinet mentioned and takes out the bottle opener, going about the process of opening the wine then letting it breathe. “What did ye have in mind ta make or is it a surprise?”

“Are you a vegetarian?” Dement ponders, looking into the cabinet as though it were a portal to another universe (one entirely made of food).

Seryn shakes her head vehemently, “Not even a little bit.” She states happily.

Dement grins, yellow eyes flashing back at Seryn as he glances sideways and considers that, “Alrighty, then it will have to be a classic from New Berlin, ja?” He pulls out some dried sausages and a plastic hamper of vegetables, moving them to his prep table. “Ooh. If it’s a picnic, I shall have to have some salad, yes. And dumplings.”

Seryn smiles brightly, “Tha sounds right lovely ta me. Is there anythn I can help ye with?”

“Yup. You can prepare the Waldwurst!” Dement replies, before he gets down on making good with a frikadellen (dumplings), potato salad and roasted Waldheimian’ cabbage side dish. It is……..

[Skill System] Dement tests his Crafts + Domestic at a modifier of 0. The result is 4.

…okay!

Seryn takes the Walwurst and stares at it for a long moment trying to figure out how you prepare such a think, she moves over and washes them hoping that this is the right thing to do then stares again. “Er, do I poke em or do I take off their little bits?” she points to the casings

“Ja, ja. Wait. What?” Dement glances over, washing some of the cabbage in the clinical sink. “Oh, nein, you can leave that on. Just slice it. No snacking!” A finger is wagged in warning.

Seryn nods and goes to stab the sausage then pauses, “Wait? No smacking? I am’na gonna smack yer sausage man, oh wait /snacking/ oh,” she begins laughing at mishearing and nods, “Oh alright, no takin a nibble.”

“Smack my… oh dear.” Dement returns to washing cabbage, shaking his head.

Seryn chuckles and stabs the sausages a couple of times, with a fork anyway, and then looks at them. “So what do I do with them now? Do I just leave them there?”

“Take the empty hamper and put them in a container.” Dement offers, “They’re dried out so you can eat them like that.” He pulls out beef from one of the many refrigerating units in the lab and mixes it with herbs and such to prepare the meatballs.

“Okay!” Seryn nods and turns her attention to doing as as ordered, she hums a tune as she does so.

Once he’s finished, Dement pops through the service hatch so he can throw those dumplingmeatballthings into the makeshift oven.

Seryn has finished with the sausage and moves to read some science while she waits for Dement, particularly as the culinary arts are not her forte at all.

After a while of cooking and preparing, Dement moves back through from the cockpit with a blanket in hand. “I’m gonna go up, can you hand the basket up to me?” And he means up, climbing up a ladder build into the forward bulkhead and engaging the compression lock in the roof of the ship. It opens out with a hiss and a burst of air breezes through the ship.

Seryn blinks in surprise and nods, setting the screen to standby and grabbing the basket, “Oh aye, I can do that.” And she does, moving up the ladder, basket in hand. She pops out and waits until Dement is ready to accept the item then hands it over.

Dement pulls it up, placing it on the hull of the Teamhair. “Four exit points, should the ship decompress and rapid repairs are needed.” He explains, “Don’t really use them for anything but washing the hull down. Probably shouldn’t wear the seals, but, who cares – right? Can you get the bottle up, too?”

Seryn nods with a bright smile, the words, “Oh it isna gonna do tha much damage to the seals if ye watch em,” before she is gone down the ladder, arriving not long with the bottle and a couple of glasses. “Anythin else afore we settle?” She and Dement are currently on top of his ship about to settle into a picnic. The horses are still sick and the scientists are having fun oh NOES!

Dement shakes his head, “Should be it.” he lays out the blanket on the top hull of the Teamhair and sits down, putting the basket down so it doesn’t blow around. “Cheers,” he offers, nodding to the wine.

Seryn gives Dement a bright smile and settles down, setting a glass before him and filling both with the wine. “So what are we eatin exactly? It looks delish.”

“Dried sausage, meatballs, cabbage and potatoes.” Dement offers.

Seryn blinks at the deadpan rendition of the food, “Aye, well it still looks lovely, thank ye for cookin it.” she raises her glass.

“..yeah..” Dement nods, offering some sausage Seryn’s way as he pulls out plates with the other hand.

Seryn is sitting with Dement on top of his ship and having a picnic, she takes the sausage with a “Thank ye.” and goes about settling the food so that it is continent for both, after a drink of wine of course.

Dement sits half on, half off of the blanket, putting his feet up against the outside ladder rung so he’s stable before taking a glass of wine and giving it a sip. “Eiru is nice.” he manages, quietly, as he appraises the view of the hills from atop the Teamhair. “It reminds me of places on Waldheim, my father would take me, because he thought it would broaden my horizons. You know, he was obsessed with survival shows. Keeping hydrated, building campfires. He laboured on about it, when he wasn’t chasing me up on my school work.”

From the farm overlooked by the Teamhair...

Hawwwnkkk… snzzzz… snnnnrrrrrr. Rrrrrrrmmmm. From the tent next to the horse’s paddock, hopefully far enough away from the ship that the people atop it do not have to hear it, Alhambra’s snoring rumbles like that of a great hibernating bear. The sides of the tent flap a bit as there is movement from within. Znnnnnkkkrrrrph. “…nnngh, goddammit…”

An oriental tune spilling from her sky blue lips, Rose sings as she walks up the northern hills. The song seems almost wordless, but those familiar with Lyiri language might be able to tell otherwise. The overweight felinoid carries in her arms a large straw basket.

The tent shuffles a bit more, and the flap zips open. Alhambra staggers drowsily out, and heads off, momentarily, towards the sand dunes, grumbling and groaning the entire time. Judging from her one-eyed squint, she hasn’t noticed -anybody- yet.

When Rose’s golden eyes catch sight of people, not just people but a ship, she shuts her mouth so fast one could doubt whether she had ever been singing. By the dignified way she holds herself, she certainly wouldn’t look as if she had. The felinoid approaches slowly, looking more at the horses then anything else.

Alhambra lumbers back from the dunes, wet-haired and significantly less asleep, although her carriage is still very slouchy. Supporting herself with one hand draped over a rung of the fence, she rummages around in the small solar-powered cooler for a bottle. “Jesus h,” she drawls to one of the horses, who has ambled over to the fence to investigate. “That was just about the most crapass naps I have ever motherfff—oh, hey there, Missy Rose,” she says, finally noticing the Lyiri. “How’s it goin?”

Rose jumps, she hadn’t noticed Alhambra near by. Quickly enough her muzzle pulls into a fang decorated smile and she hefts her basket into one arm so that she can wave with the other. “Mrs Alhambra!” The Lyiri calls back, picking up her pace to join the human. “How are you? It’s nice up here. Quiet in its own way, especially compared to the town.”

…back up on the Teamhair…

Seryn sits cross-legged and settles in to listen and eat, “So ye spent a lot o’ time out doors then? An did it broaden yer horizons? Fer myself, my parents moved from Ireland when I was in my early teens. T’wasn’t neither were overly involved with the outdoors, nor was my older sister come ta think o’ it.”

“No, not really.” Dement replies with a sigh, “I thought he was trying to push /another/ of his interests on me so I went out of my way to be bad at it. I miss it, though. I miss home. Every time I step out of the Teamhair I miss home.” He turns his bright yellow eyes across on Seryn and they settle, falling down to his wine glass. “Ireland.” he repeats, frowning, “Twentieth biggest island on Earth, part of the United Kingdom, north west of Eurasia. I don’t speak it, but the Teamhair was named in Gaelic. It means hill.”

“Ahhh I see. That would be hard, ta have yer parent try an push ye into their interests. Mine passes not long after we moved ta the states.” She smiles at the information, “I had wondered, tis a good name for a ship, particularly this one. It fits it quite well.” She doesn’t seem to notice other people as of yet and goes about eating her food with dainty bites.

“The United States of America, you mean?” Dement queries, stabbing at some of the sweet cabbage he prepared and trying to fork in some potato salad sauce along with it.

Seryn nods, “Oh aye, the United States o’ Merica’. It wasna a bad place ta live an certainly had it’s charms but it wasna home. What was yer home like? I notice the German influence in yer accent.”

“A good amount of Waldheim came directly from german immigrants.” Dement nods, “Specifically where I was raised, New Berlin. We moved there when I was… three, four maybe? Best place on Waldheim for education, ja? I was to be a proper engineer, so my father could tell everyone I was the one who took away the rocks from… Heh, his family was actually from.. Ukrainia? The Ukraine?”

“Oh! The Ukraine is a lovely place. So ye have German and Ukrainian influences?” She digs into the potato and then the salad, “The food is excellent by the by.”

…and back down at the farm…

“Yeah, it sure as hell is nice up here, been here for a while, looking after the horses. Eiru’s just done got perfect weather for camping, don’t it?” Alhambra drawls, leaning on the fence. She winces, ever so slightly, and covers it up with a cough. “Not missus,” she corrects, gently. “It’s ‘Miss’ if you gotta but really honey you can just call me Al.” She cracks the bottle open and brushes a wet strand of hair from her brow. “So what brings you out here? Gonna do some picnickin? Get curious about the horsies? Or did Doc Miranda send you out here to make sure I ain’t neglectin myself.”

The Lyiri looks down at her basket to hide her confused look. “Oh! Yes, well there are some snacks in here… but… also…” Rose sets the basket down and opens it up. Inside there are indeed some wrapped food bundles, but also some holoslates. The top most ones show scrolling musical notes and words. “Just uh, reading material.” She says, shutting the basket again. “Should I have been sent up here to make sure you’re not neglecting yourself? You’ve been eating well?”

Alhambra purses her lips, and thinks carefully about her answer to Rose. “Um… yes? I mean yes, I been eating fine, no, I don’t -particularly- need looking after…” She sets her bottle on the fence post and pauses to run her hands through her wet hair. The horse who had approached the fence promptly noses said bottle, and knocks it into the grass. “Aw, -hell-,” Al says, not terribly surprised. The horse tosses her head, looking as pleased with herself as a horse can. “Yeah yeah I know, you feeling better, time to make fun on Auntie Al.” She picks up the bottle and brushes grass and spilled drink from it, chuckling indulgently. “Studying music and shit? That’s pretty cool. My mom used to play the guitar, although I don’t even know if they have those around here. I know Doc Voluria’s got one.”

“There are a few around, I saw a man playing one at the tavern a few nights ago.” Rose replies as she picks the basket up, carrying it once more in both arms. Her tail curls and snakes behind her as she watches the horse, keeping a respectful distance from the animal. “The sheriff used to ride on one of those, right?” She asks, tilting her head and examining it.

Alhambra nods to Rose, a bit solemnly. “Yeah, these are horses, just like the Sheriff used to have. A couple of these are healthy but a lot of ‘em are still pretty sick. Me and some other folks are looking after them, trying to make them all better, y’see. They done rifted in a while back and I been camped out here to keep them fed, and watered, and to give ‘em good oxygen to breathe so they don’t die. Don’t worry, it ain’t catching or nothing. I think this one’s Arabella or something, Doc Sadie’s favorite, she cleared up just a coupla nights ago.”

“Oh! I had heard that you folk were up here treating something, but I didn’t know they were /horses/.” Rose studies the horse a little longer, frowning. “They’re so /big/.” She notes, after a while, whiskers twitching nervously. As one of the horses flicks its tail, the Lyiri takes a few steps back. “Yes, I think I’ll find another spot for my er, reading.”

…and back on the Teamhair…

Dement nods at the question, glancing down at the two talking at the farm. He smiles a little, something for himself, and chomps down on a meaty dumpling. “What got you into science?” he asks, after he swallows the last morsel.

“Curiosity more then anythin’. I have always wanted to know /why/ and /how/ an science an engineerin gave me, if not answers, then direction to understandin.” As she speaks, Seryn’s voice goes a little dreamy, “It is all a mystery, a giant puzzle. Life, the universe, an everythin. Well universes I suppose.” she grins then asks, “What about ye? What led ye in that direction?”

“My parents… and talent.” Dement shrugs, “I didn’t really have a choice. I was putting together engines by the age of six, by ten I could speak three languages fluently and enrolling at a technical university. I spent most of my teenage years in New Berlin Academy, going between courses. Never really fitted in, so I just kept learning. And then we were ‘conquered’ by Sivad. I was sent off to Sol Station to apprentice again so Waldheim could call me back in a few years as a teacher. Suddenly, I was catching up on a millenia of scientific progress.”

Seryn has finished her food and is stretched out on the blanket with her glass of wine and looks impressed, “Wow, an what happened after ye came back ta Waldheim as a teacher?” Her eyes trail over the edge of the ship to those below for a moment and she grins but her attention returns to Dement rather quickly.

“Did you ever hear about the Thul Resequencing Virus?” Dement questions, before he goes on.

Seryn shakes her head, “No I havena heard of such a Virus. Though from the name I can already tell it would be nasty.”

“New Berlin governance made some wrong turns… a lot of people died, almost including me. Students. Families. Killed, murdered, keep a virus contained.” Dements mood droops as he turns his eyes downwards, “I wasn’t a New Berliner from that day on. I never went back.”

…and down at the farm…

Alhambra picks up rather quickly on the Lyiri’s unease. “Don’t worry, hon, they ain’t gonna jump the fence, and they don’t eat folks or nothin’,” she drawls, rummaging a couple more bottles out of her cooler. “C’mon, we can go sit out on the dunes and you can have your snacks. I’ll be quiet, yeah?”

“They don’t?” Rose asks, doubtfully. “They look like they might…” But trusting Al, she nods. “Okay! And you don’t have to be quiet, I brought enough to share. I always do. Perhaps you could take a look at the music with me, tell me what you like. The holoslates are capable of playing most tunes.”

“Heh. Yeah, they don’t. They are herbivorous, and all. But it’s good to be respectful ’cause yeah they are big and they got a bite on ‘em that’ll give a predator the old get-lost message right quick, and some of the ladies are preggers so they’re gonna be mighty protective of their future littluns,” Al drawls, starting to plod towards the dunes. “Sure, I like music, and I sure as hell like snacks. What’d ya bring?”

“Caramel slice!” Rose declares brightly, shooting one last look back to the gathered horses before she starts padding towards the dunes as well. “The cooks helped me whip it up this morning. I haven’t tried any yet, but it smells heavenly.”

The two head down towards the beach.

…back on the Teamhair…

Seryn looks at Dement with sympathy, “Ah well, an no reason why ye should be. An how did ye find yerself here? Did ye have the ship with ye when ye came or did tha come after?” Subject change go!

“I rifted through in my pyjamas, in the middle of Comorro. I was in the middle of getting a drink and reading a story on my PDA. When I looked up from it, I was stood in the tradeport being shouted at by a Lotorian for standing in the way.” Dement replies, smile still affected by the previous topic.

Seryn blinks in surprise, “In yer pajamas? Oh dear, an what did ye do from there? Ye have come a long way from pajamas in Comorro.” She gently taps the top of the ship.

“Stayed with the refugee camp for a while.” Dement continues, “Though I’m not from the most technologically advanced age – I’ve met rifters from at least the 45th century – my knowledge is still years ahead of anything Hiverspace is working in, even now. That builds demand, even if people don’t trust you. Eventually, I was picked up to oversee the construction of the Orion Confederacy fleet. I could afford to ‘splash out’ a little.”

“Orion Confederacy? A government then? Were they at least good ta work for?” Taking a sip of wine, Seryn settles a bit more comfortably on the blanket and considers Dement. “Ye have some good friends as well.” She begins looking somewhat amused, “Not everyone would have a friend ta take em out drinkin’ on their birthday with em wearin’ such a fantastic outfit.”

“A government, yes.” the engineer offers when she asks, “Uh, actually, we met that night.” Dement counters with a grin, “…but Fritz, he’s kinda funny, ja? His accent is worse than mine, I think he might actually have been from Earth.”

Seryn looks somewhat surprised, “Ye two met when ye first rifted in? How long ago was that?” She chuckles, “He might well be, did ye never ask? He certainly does have a different accent though I havena had much of a chance ta speak with him.”

“No, we met on my birthday night.” Dement says with a chuckle, “I’ve only known him for a month or two. That’s why I haven’t asked.” He past Seryn as one of the sick horses trots slowly across the farm to get to the delicious grass on the other side of the paddock. He smiles, “It is nice to have friends, though… You seem to get along well with Sadie, too?”

“Oh!” Seryn grins, “Aye she is a sweet girl and very good with the critters an they seem ta like her very well indeed.” smiling she looks out across the farm then sighs as she looks at the horses sadly, “This is why I canna do medicine, it is difficult ta have such a task as tryin ta find a cure, just imaginin doin that as yer main job.” she shakes her head, “Tha would be too hard for me I think.”

“Seeing a life suffer is never easy, Seryn, but seeing one suffer and not doing anything about it?” He gives her a solemn look, “It’s a lot harder. Really, it is.”

Seryn considers that for a long moment and nods, “I can see that, I suppose that is why I come down here ta feed an water em. Perhaps what I am feelin is helplessness rather then seein the sufferin. It is one thing ta be researchin for the joy of it, an another ta have lives dependin on it. Although conversely, I am happy ta be havin the chance to help. Tis very odd, an really my first time seein who I am doin the work for I suppose.”

Dement smiles and nods, finishing his second glass and putting it down against the basket so he can stretch a little. “I wonder how that poor man is doing… I can’t believe that Demarian shot him. Where did it comes from?” he peers around the hull of the Teamhair.

“We can go visit him in the hospital if ye like.”Seryn nods then thinks about the question, “If I were ta guess, I canna properly know as I was in the ship at the time, but I think she rifted in above the ship and fell down. She had that sort of dazed an confused look that all of us riftees seem ta sport upon first arrival, though far more aggressive then most I think.” She finishes her own glass and sets it aside for the moment, “I canna imagine a shot to the stomach is overly pleasant.”

“No.” Dement says, plainly, “It’s not.”

Seryn blinks in surprise and considers Dement a moment, “That sounds as though ye have personal experience.” she sighs a moment then shakes her head, “Ye have had a hard life I think,” She looks up at the man again, “Ye are a very strong man, and a good one.”

“You’ve met me at a very calm period of my life, Seryn.” Dement passes through a vague blush, looking forward so he can remain as stoic as possible, “Honestly? I don’t know how I’m still alive. The more I think about it, the more I believe the rifts have a purpose. Like they’re targeting exactly where we need to be, at any given time. I don’t know why I was brought to Hiverspace, but I’d like to think there is a reason for it.” he looks back to her, “Is that odd?”

Seryn looks rather introspective at that, “I dunna think it is odd. If it is so however, I dunna why it didn’t happen sooner, I could have been far happier if it had happened before I met the Bastard.” The word bastard said in a resigned rather then angry tone, “I imagine that there are others who would wonder the same, who would question why they must lose all they knew an loved ta start a new life but I suppose people feel the same after war or illness or any number of other extreme change in their lives too.” She smiles then grins, “Then again I dunna imagine my students are too sad ta see me poof, though they will be when they realize that now they dunna have funding.” She then looks a bit concerned but shrugs, “There are systems in place though so they should be fine.”

“You think they do just… go on… without us?” Dement asks, picking up on something she says and reserving it for the moment.

Seryn rubs the blanket between her fingers as she takes a moment to consider, “I dunna see how they could do otherwise. Life continues, with or without a single life. It is the same when someone dies, oh aye they likely spend time lookin. Tryin ta find the rifted person but time passes and hope dies. And so there is mournin, and then there is acceptance. Dependin on the person gone and what they meant to those left behind, there might be depression and painful loss, but time has a habit o’ makin the pain fade a little at a time. So long as the memory stays then ye are still there for them in one form at least.”

Dement falls quiet. Very quiet. Something about what Seryn is taking about seems to be echoed in his expression, not one of inquiry but of remembered pain. He leans forward, staring out across the hills.

Seryn seems to be pondering her own words, a resigned expression on her own face and though her eyes are pointed out across the distance it is obvious she doesn’t really see any of it. After a long moment she sighs then smiles, “Ah but if we were pulled here for a purpose then we can only live to the fullest eh? We must do our best and find happiness as we can.”

“Good,” Dement offers, after a thought break, “Because that’s what we’re doing right?” He looks back, managing a wry smile, “And I think finishing that bottle might be the best way to do just that…” he takes it and offers a refill.

Seryn nods with a smile of her own and lifts her glass for a refill, “I couldna agree more. I think I will need to get a couple more bottles of this one when I am next at the market.” she murmurs

“So…” Dement leans forward, after filling both of their glasses till the last drop of wine is gone, “Who is /the bastard/.” he manages a cheeky grin, one eyebrow raised.

Seryn takes up the glass and gives Dement a grin, “Ahhh aye the Bastard. He would be my ex husband, and a worse man I havena yet met.” She sighs, “Though he was incredibly charmin when he wanted ta be.” Her left ring finger is bare and there is no sign of it having recently worn a ring there.

Dement just grins further, “I wonder if any of my exes refer to me with such a nickname.” he muses, “I think I’d be flattered. How long were you married?”

Seryn grins as well and considers, “Ohhh about eight years. We had a son,” she slips a hand in a pocket and brings out a picture, on it is a boy about seven years old. “This was right before his father took him an disappeared. I spent years lookin an couldna find him or them rather.”

“You ever think they might have rifted?” Dement ponders, looking at the picture with a grim expression.

Seryn looks stunned at the thought then frowns, “I hadna thought of that.” She looks at the picture again for a long moment before putting it back. “If they did then I will find em, I dunna want the man but findin my son would be good.” She then looks up with a small smile, “How many times have ye been married then ta have exs be plural?”

“Married? No.” Dement replies, “But I’ve had a couple of girls and boys that I’ve snubbed over the years. And one who, well,” he chuckles meekly, “I thought I was going to be with him forever. And then he was rifted three years before me. I thought I’d lost him forever and, I think in some ways, I did.”

Seryn rests her head on a hand as she listens, “He changed? They do that sometimes.” she seems to think back into memory, “Bastard changed, he was kind, romantic, seemed endlessly lovin, then he got a job at a huge pharmaceutical company an little by little I lost him. By the end it took a restrainin order an’ an armed escort ta get him away, then he stole my son.”

“I changed.” Dement cuts in, looking down at the basket. “Three years apart, grieving, moving on, surviving a war, rifting into Hiverspace and then… There he is, ‘Hello!’, and it’s been a couple of months for him…” A wave of guilt flushes onto Dement’s expression. “I just ran.”

Seryn listens quietly and considers the words, “Ah but that is hardly yer fault either. Experience does change a person, and that is some harsh experience ta go through too. Ye don’ just glide through such things an continue on as though it never happened. Have ye spoken to him since?”

“Uh. No.” Dement manages, drinking more wine.

“Ye might want ta at one point, it might help ye to move on er, again anyway. Or not, I dunno what would work best in this sort of situation.” Seryn says quietly as she looks into her own glass and seems to ponder the the liquid within, “Though I dunno if there ever is a right answer eh?” she looks up then with a smile, “Then again, ye can never have too many friends.”

“I suppose not.” Dement says with a smile, “Just requires a little bravery, ja? Not something I’m so good at.”

Seryn is sitting on top of Dement’s ship with Dement himself having just eaten a wonderful meal and they are now finishing the wine and chatting. She nods with a broad grin, “Oh aye, but ye know the great thing? If someone doesna like ye then it is their loss not yers. So ye do what ye can and ye see where things go. If ye never take a chance then that means ye never get the reward o’ friendship,” she pauses then, “Or more.”

“I don’t think it’d ever be like that again.” Dement offers with a grin, “For a while, sure, I held a torch for Tres, but I don’t think I could ever be close to him again. I’ve been like that with all my partners. I just… disconnect. And anyway, what a sour topic to dwell on when we’re drinking wine and eating together, ja? Past is past, and I have a… pretty scientist, sat right there, to dwell on.”

Seryn blushes lightly at that, turning the wine glass in her hand before taking a sip. When she finishes that composure regaining gesture, she smiles at Dement, “Ye are right, the present is far more pleasant then the past. Where did ye learn ta cook by the by?” She leans forward to stage whisper, “Ye want ta know a secret? I have two things I could never get to work, cookin and keepin plants alive. I swear they both are against me!”

“I uh, I watch… watched a lot of holovision. Cookery shows are part of that. I just like learning.” Dement grins, “I’m like an information sponge, and the only way I can get the use out of that information is by following up on weird projects.”

Seryn laughs in delight, “Oh I do too, just for some reason I get distracted with some idea or another an over do it, or under do it. I can do protocols but tryin ta make edible or good food is beyond me. What other projects do ye do?”

“Oh, y’know, silly stuff.” Dement murmurs, “I was trying to make a pie that could use an anti-mass field to float off the ground, before I picked up on the issue with the horses.”

Seryn looks intrigued, “Ohhhh, that sounds like it would be great fun. How was it workin before ye had to stop? did ye manage ta get it ta float at all? Was the field stable or was it still osculatin? Anti-mass huh? Would tha not destroy what is either below or around it? Or did ye change frequencies?”

“Only if you don’t contain the negative mass.” Dement ponders, “Rather, I tried to create a strong enough negative mass, positive energy field around the pie that it would counter-act the pie’s own mass and elevate it into the air. Technically, the pie wasn’t ever really flying and yes, I got it working. The only problem was that the pie would freeze before it got to the table.”

“What about addin a second field, like a to magnets so they repulse each other, that should help keep the pie from freezin, you would just have ta be able ta contain direction an ta keep the power down but it might work.” Seryn takes a drink of her wine as she ponders.

“In theory, sure, but I’d need a second generator.” Dement nods. “Perhaps I’ll get one. You can serve a pie hot, right out of the oven then.”

Seryn nods in agreement, “Oh aye, ye would also be able to have finer control that way too though. Depending on how much power is given to which generator when, it might even be able ta use the same method to steer as well.”

“Cool.” Dement says softly, finishing his glass entirely and pouting a little as he looks back at the empty glass. Seryn smiles sweetly, “There is always that mysterious bottle in yer cupboard.” enter eyelash fluttering

“Indeed.” Dement manages in a dry drawl, “Although, perhaps we shouldn’t be getting ahead of ourselves. Those results aren’t going to analyse themselves tonight.” He tails off somewhat wistfully.

Seryn chuckles, “Ah but jus think, those analysis can lead to some wonderful science, cause then we get ta sequence!” She smirks as she makes that last statement as enthusiastic as she can muster, which isn’t much, “I hate sequencin, takes forever and ya have ta /wait/ for the machine ta process.” she sighs, “Ah well, we are close ta being able to use the data though, as we almost have all of the data rendered.”

“Exactly, which means we’ll have a cure, right? I think we can do this.” Dement grins and start putting some of the picnic remains in the cupboard basket.

Seryn begins helping to clean up with a grin, “Absolutely! We can do this, we are so close. I took a glimpse of the new data, tis very interestin if what I saw was any indication.”

“Well lets get to it,” Dement smiles, standing to take the stuff back into the ship. “And we’ll open that bottle when we’re done.”

Seryn cheers and goes about picking up with more vigor. Finishing the cleaning she practically skips to the hatch, “Science an wine, they go great together!” And with a wink she is down the ladder, blanket, bottle, and glasses in hand.
